Day 2: MERO SECRET TOUR

9.00AM:     Macoucherie (1hour)

Macoucherie is home to the Shillingford Estate Distillery which produces rum from the sugar cane that it grows on the estate.  Macoucherie Rum Factory is the only factory that still operates a water mill and the cane is crushed by water powered rollers as has been done continuously for over 200 years.   A stone canal still channels the water from the river to the mill. The rum is consumed domestically, as well as exported. It is considered to be the best base for many variations of rum punch that are sold around the island.

10.30AM:      Gros Morne Waterfall (Skelford Falls) (2 ½ hours)

The waterfall is located at Gros Morne on Skelford Estate. The hike to the fall starts in the citrus and banana plantation and continues to a beautiful pool surrounded by the luxurious rainforest vegetation.  Sometimes a black land crab can be seen passing through the rocks. The clear water which is flowing through the rocks offers a natural jacuzzi where one can have a body massage. This is a moderate hike, but a tour guide is recommended.

1.00PM:     Lunch at Connie’s Restaurant & Bar

2.00PM:     Mero Beach (Seabath)

Located twenty minutes away from the capital, Roseau, the warm black sand and the smooth winds from the Caribbean Sea offers complete relaxation.  The beach at Mero stretches from the village south beyond the Castaways Beach Hotel. The sea is calm and clear, and excellent for swimming.  There are activities along the beach such as kayaks, and volleyball.  The bay is also well-known as an anchorage for visiting yachts and there are restaurants and snack bars along the beach, offering delicacies from the village.
4.00PM:        Bat Cave (Optional)

This cave overlooks the sea, and is located on the old coast road.  Littoral vegetation is present on the walk to the cave.  The friendly species of bat you might see is the Artibeus Jamaicensis (430mm), a fruit eating bat which lives in the sea cave.
